Mr Joaquín Valdés Sancho
MADRID
Sir:
Over these weeks we have followed the publication, in the periodical you edit, of a series of articles related to the civilization of our planet UMMO.
The text: as you know, is based on a series of reports which we have been giving at a certain pace to Mr Fernando Sesma Manzano.
An order from my superior leads me to express to you our cordial congratulations on the objectivity with which you accepted statements of that nature.
One might, indeed, have expected a stance of logical scepticism, of prudent censure towards statements which a large percentage of readers will judge apocryphal and intended solely to provide a sensationalist touch, fit only for individuals of as little intellectual training as exuberant imagination.
But this mental reserve has been flexible enough to tolerate their publication, giving proof -we repeat- of a high critical spirit and an unusual impartiality of judgement.
It does not matter -as you have hinted in some comments- that you do not entirely share Mr Sesma's points of view, and we judge beforehand that both stances are imbued with rigorous logic. Ideas and assertions such as those we are offering Mr Sesma are in principle so surprising to you that, if they are not backed by a rich range of scientific proofs or reliable testimonies, they can and must be interpreted as the work of a prankster, the delirious ideas of a paranoid mentality or, at the very least, the clever subterfuge of an unscrupulous journalist or publicist.
When a piece of news breaks the normal moulds of plausibility and one lacks the elements of judgement to assess and attest to its reality, any balanced mind has the right to adopt an attitude of justified suspicion. We must never accept a mere testimony, but rather the arguments that support it. And if, despite everything, such an assertion were to be confirmed, it would be unjust to brand our stance a priori as narrow-minded.
But the position of one who tolerates “a priori” any version, in order to analyse it dispassionately and carefully in search of the truth, is also admissible. In fact, any competent scientific researcher uses this healthy method in his analyses.
This was precisely Mr Sesma's criterion, and also our line of conduct, when in an earlier series on the so-called “EXTRATERRESTRIALS” we learned his version of certain contacts established by this gentleman in those days.
Since we come from another inhabited star, we do not hide from you that, from our arrival on Earth and after overcoming an anguishing stage in which the difficulties of language and adaptation took on truly dramatic proportions for us, we were surprised by the news lavished at the time by the press of those days that other supposed spacecraft (or flying saucers, as they call them), which of course were not ours, were continually arriving on Earth.
Seen from our perspective: That is, as we ourselves constitute a living example of that reality, we could not easily accept the hypothesis -then in vogue among authorised scientists and specialists- that those supposed luminescent discs were mere sensory illusions (meteorites, sounding balloons, atmospheric mirror phenomena, refracted circular images, helicopters, jokes by certain citizens, psychological phenomena of collective suggestion or simple hallucinations of mentally disturbed people), although we share the opinion that in a certain percentage of cases these were the acceptable interpretations.
But we confess to you that we have been disappointed at not achieving the slightest contact with third parties on this Planet, although on ours we have a rich range of experiences.
That is why Professor Sesma's comments strongly attracted our attention, even though elements of little credibility could be detected in them. Assertions that were more childish than scientific. Speculations in which astrology, magic and misinterpreted symbolism easily mingled with other factors, other signs, which strongly attracted our attention.
It was enough for us to clear away the undergrowth of his accounts a little and carry out a careful semantic study of his prose, on the one hand, and an investigation into the psychology and identity of this gentleman, to reach these conclusions, which we summarise for you below:
1st. That in his writings Mr Sesma was not lying deliberately, although his comments suffered from a lack of scientific criticism and an excess of naivety.
2nd. That the interference of some prankster or pranksters or individuals of bad faith was evident, who, taking advantage of the writer's open attitude, used his first accounts to induce distorted versions in him.
3rd. That despite these few negative factors, the reality of his contacts was plausible to a high degree. This thesis is corroborated by certain apparently secondary details which appeared in his articles and which Mr Sesma or the said distorting individuals could not possibly have imagined.
In view of that situation, and although until then we had only established prudent and sober relations with some men of science and a few cultural bodies in certain countries (we do not hide the fact that with logical incredulity on their part), we received formal instructions to begin contacts with the Spaniard Mr Sesma Manzano.
The first reactions of reticence on his part confirmed, of course, that he was not an excessively credulous man, although we maintain the point of view noted in second place. Only when we provided him with a series of proofs was his natural distrust overcome.
At present my superior in Spain holds frequent telephone conversations with this gentleman, and I periodically dictate a series of reports on the civilization of UMMO using the typing services of a faithful compatriot of yours, whom we will in due course authorise to bear witness to the relations maintained with us.
In fact, the destination of these reports was a group of interested persons whom Mr Sesma has guided and directed for some years.
Although we reasonably fear that his initiative of bringing these documents to public light may not give the results he would wish, we refrain from curbing his enthusiasm.
We are sorry that Mr Sesma Manzano may regard what we are about to say as what you call “a jug of cold water”, but if we had the vaguest suspicion that such revelations might cause an “impact” on the mass of readers or spread in an exorbitant way, generating a collective psychosis with serious consequences, we would be obliged to curb with our silence that improbable popular enthusiasm, for reasons which Mr Sesma himself has been able to observe in our writings.
YU 1 daughter of AIM 368, to whom all the members of this UMMO vanguard on EARTH are subordinate, sends you her cordial greetings. So she asks me to do.
